Getting around
There are no direct flights to St. John, so visitors to the island
fly in to St. Thomas and then come over by ferry or car barge. Once on
the island, the primary way to get around is either by taxi or by
renting a car or SUV.
Getting to St. John from the St. Thomas airport
4 options are available:
1. Rent a vehicle/drive to barge - Some visitors choose to rent
a vehicle on St. Thomas and barge to St. John, avoiding the
multiple loading and unloading of people and luggage from taxis to
ferries, and back.
You can have a rental vehicle reserved
at the St. Thomas airport and drive the length of St. Thomas to the
Red Hook "vehicle barge" dock (approx. 1 hour) and barge to St. John.
This option requires paying special attention to your flight arrival
time and making certain that you can get on the last scheduled barge
of the day, generally 7 p.m. (in addition to patience, and good humor).
Remember to plan for the return trip (barge schedule/flight departure).

2. Take a taxi-van to the ferry - From the taxi
dispatch area at the St. Thomas airport, take shared taxi vans to
one of the two St. Thomas ferry docks (Redhook or Downtown) &
proceed by public ferry to St. John.
3. Take a private taxi to the ferry or barge
- You can have a pre-reserved private taxi meet you at the airport
and take you to one of the two ferry docks. Remember to arrange for
the return taxi trip to the St. Thomas airport.
RedHook Dock
Cab Fare from STT Airport to RedHook is approximately $15 per person; plus $2/bag
Downtown Charlotte Amalie
Cab Fare from STT Airport to Charlotte Amalie is approximately $7 per person; $6 each 2+; plus
$2/bag
Fares may change, but are posted at the airport.
Confirm fares with your driver.

4. Take a water taxi to St. John - another option,
though more expensive, is to reserve a private "water taxi" from Charlotte
Amalie to take you from one of the St. Thomas docks to St. John National
Park dock.

Ferry/Barge Schedules
We recommend that guests take the Redhook ferry because of its
hourly schedule and because of schedule inconsistencies with the downtown
ferry. If taking the downtown ferry is desired, please call Varlack
Ventures at 340-776-6412 for its current schedule and cost.

Once on St. John
If you are staying at Gallows Point, a vehicle is NOT a
necessity
as taxis are reasonably priced and plentiful
to and from the major beaches and within any Cruz Bay
location.
Any stay at Gallows Point Resort includes free
transportation on a shuttle from the Cruz Bay ferry dock to the resort,
and back. Cruz Bay restaurants and shops are a 5 minute leisurely stroll
from
Gallows Point along the beach. In Cruz Bay town, the best
way to get
around is by walking. Taxis can be arranged at the Gallows
Point Gourmet
Shop, or can be hailed anywhere.
Should you decide to rent a jeep or other type vehicle on St.
John,
you can rent by the day, or by the week. For a group of four
planning
to go to beaches daily, renting a vehicle makes sense. Any
guests who really want to explore the whole island should consider
renting a vehicle for at least a day or two. The Gallows
Point Gourmet Shop can assist you in renting a vehicle
on St. John and they offer free concierge services to plan activities
like day sails, scuba, etc.
If renting by the week, it is advisable to reserve in
advance of your
arrival.
