Getting from the St. Thomas airport, to St. John, 4 options are available:

  • 1. From the taxi dispatch area at the St. Thomas airport, take shared taxi vans to one of the two St. Thomas ferry docks (Redhook or Downtown) & proceed by public ferry to St. John. We recommend that guests take the Redhook ferry, because of schedule inconsistencies with the downtown ferry. If you want take the downtown ferry, call Varlack Ventures for the current schedule & cost at 340-776-6412.

  • 2. You can have a rental vehicle reserved at the St. Thomas airport and drive the length of St. Thomas to the Red Hook "vehicle barge" dock (approx. 1 hour) and barge to St. John. This option requires paying special attention to your flight arrival time and making certain that you can get on the last scheduled barge of the day, generally 7 p.m. (in addition to patience, and good humor). Remember to plan for the return trip (barge schedule/flight departure).

  • 3. You can have a pre-reserved private taxi meet you at the airport and take you to one of the two ferry docks; Remember to arrange for the return taxi trip to the St. Thomas airport.

  • 4. Another option, though more expensive, is to reserve a private "water taxi" to take you from one of the St. Thomas docks to St. John National Park dock..

    Once on St. John    , if you are staying at Gallows Point, a vehicle is NOT a necessity as taxis are reasonably priced (about $5 pp each way) and plentiful to and from the major beaches & within any Cruz Bay location. Cruz Bay restaurants and shops are a 5 minute leisurely stroll from Gallows Point along the beach. In Cruz Bay town, the best way to get around is by walking. Taxis can be arranged at the Gallows Point Gourmet Shop, or can be hailed anywhere.

    Should you decide to rent a jeep or other type vehicle on St. John, you can rent by the day, or by the week. For a group of four planning to go to beaches daily, renting a vehicle makes economic sense. The Gallows Point Gourmet Shop can assist you in renting a vehicle on St. John. If renting by the week, it is advisable to reserve in advance of your arrival.

    Renting a vehicle on St. Thomas, and barging to St. John requires paying attention to your flight arrival time and making certain that you can get on the last scheduled barge of the day (in addition to patience, and good humor). It is about a one hour drive from the STT airport to the Redhook barge. Remember to plan for the return trip (barge schedule/flight departure). "Sedan" model vehicles are fine on St. John, as all roads are paved. Budget and Avis in St. Thomas have reduced rates for 1 week rentals on "sedans" though all vehicle types are available. Because Budget has a location at Sapphire Beach in Red Hook near St. John, renting from Budget is preferred for customer service convenience (i.e mechanical problems, vehicle swaps, etc).

    Most seasoned travelers staying in villas rent a vehicle on St. Thomas and barge to St. John, avoiding the multiple loading and unloading of people and luggage from taxis to ferries, and back. There are trade offs, and advantages to each option.

We recommend that guests take the Redhook ferry because of its hourly schedule and because of schedule inconsistencies with the downtown ferry. If taking the downtown ferry is desired, please call Varlack Ventures at 340-776-6412 for its current schedule and cost.

An alternative for acquiring a vehicle for use on St. John is to rent from Budget or Avis at the St. Thomas Airport and take the vehicle on the barge from St. Thomas, Red Hook to St. John. Be certain that you
mention that the rental will be barged to St. John. Also "sedan" style
vehicles are perfectly fine for St. John as all roads are paved.
Both Budget & Avis offer bargain prices for 1 week rentals on sedans. Because Budget has a location at Sapphire Beach in Red Hook near St. John, renting from Budget is preferred due to any customer service issues.

The last barge leaves St. Thomas towards St. John at approximately 7 p.m. You should plan for approximately a one hour drive from the
St. Thomas airport to the Red Hook barge.
